What is Two Factor Authentication (2FA)?
2FA is a method of strengthening account security by requiring two authentication factors to verify the identity of the user. For example, a password and a one-time 6 digit code generated by an authentication app. 2FA is a type of MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication).
The Civis Platform login security standard is either SSO or two factor authentication (2FA).
Configuring 2FA
Civis supports 2FA codes via authentication app or SMS text messages. Authentication apps are the recommended way to generate codes because they are more secure and reliable than SMS messages. SMS text messages may not work for phone numbers outside of the US.
For instructions on how to set up 2FA with an authentication app, please see How to Set Up Google Authenticator for Civis Platform.
2FA Reset
If a user no longer has access to their authenticator, for example, if the device is lost or damaged, they will need to have their 2FA reset.
2FA can be reset by client Organization Admins, Team Admins, or Civis Support.
If you need your 2FA reset, please reach out to your internal Platform Admins or see our Account Recovery Policy and Process for instructions on how to request a reset from Civis Support.
Admin Reset 2FA Instructions
If you are an Organization or Team Admin, you can reset 2fa for users you manage via Admin Center.
- Find the user you need to reset 2FA for, either on the Users index page or their User detail page.
- Click the [...] to open the standard action menu.
- Click “Reset 2FA”
- Click Yes to confirm the 2FA reset or Cancel to back out.
- After clicking “Yes”, the user will receive an email notifying them that their 2FA has been reset and that they need to log in again in order to reset it. The user must log into Platform to complete the reset process.
Enable or Disable 2FA
If necessary, 2FA can be enabled or disabled for a user by Platform Admins using the Edit User Modal. Disabling 2FA long-term is not recommended. Please see Updating Users for further details.
