Assuming a user’s role allows you to view Platform as that user does. You will be able to see and interact with Platform objects as that user.
Any changes you make while assuming the role of another user are saved. This means creating new jobs, editing existing jobs, changing a user's filter and sorting settings, and more will all be saved as if the user themselves is taking those actions.
Restrictions
For security purposes, some actions are restricted while assuming role:
- You cannot update user account settings (e.g. password, email, 2FA) as another user.
- You cannot create or revoke API keys as another user, unless that user is a robot.
- You cannot update Github, Bitbucket, Google, or Redshift credentials as another user, unless that user is a robot.
Which Roles can I Assume?
In order to assume the role of another user, you must have manage permissions over the user’s primary group. Organization Admins have manage permissions on all groups in their organization and can thus assume role of all users in the organization.
You can view group permissions under Advanced > Related Groups when viewing a group in Admin Center.
Note: You cannot assume the role of deactivated or suspended users, or users with expired passwords.
How to Assume Role
- Navigate to the top right corner of your control bar, click the Admin drop down and select Admin Center.
- Search for the user you want to assume role of.
- Click on the dots, then click Assume Role.
- Once you have assumed a user's role, a yellow banner will appear in Platform.
- To exit assuming another user's role, navigate to the user's initials on the top right-hand corner of Platform and select Resume Original Role.
Quick Assume Role Menu
For your convenience, your top 5 most recently assumed roles will be accessible via the Quick Assume Role menu. This menu can be accessed by clicking on your User Initials in the top right hand corner of the nav bar. To assume role of one of these users, simply click on the user’s name.
Working with Multiple Accounts
Note that you cannot have multiple Platform accounts (such as a personal account and a robot account) open in normal Chrome separate tabs or separate windows. If you find yourself needing to switch back and forth between accounts frequently, we recommend creating a new browser profile via the profile icon in the upper-right corner of your browser. This will allow you to work in both accounts simultaneously. You can access the new profile via the same icon. More documentation on Chrome Profiles can be found here.
