What are Reports
Reports are Platform objects that are backed by another type of report object. This allows you to use common reporting frameworks and display these reports through Civis Platform.
Types of Report
There are four kinds of reports available in Civis:
- Tableau - Reports built with Tableau Desktop, hosted on Civis’ Tableau Server. - See Publishing Reports in Tableau.
- SQL - Reports backed by a Platform Query, see SQL Reports. See Creating Reports with SQL
- HTML - Reports uploaded as a single HTML page (with optional Javascript).
- Services - Reports backed by Civis Services.
How to Find and View Reports
Reports can be found on the Reports Index. From the top Navigation Bar click “Publish”
Then in the menu that appears click “Reports” and you will be redirected to the Reports Index
Publishing Reports
The publishing process will vary depending on what type of report is backing the Civis Report to be Published.
Introduction to Reporting on Civis Platform for Publishers
If you are new to Civis Platform or the reporting process in general Introduction the Reporting on Civis Platform is a video presentation and slide deck can be a helpful resource as you are getting started. This resource will provide an overview of the options available and provide a little more detail about each of the options available below.
If you already know which reporting framework you would like to use see the section below for a little more information and some links to documentation.
Tableau
To publish Tableau Reports to Platform you will publish to the Civis Platform Tableau Server. These reports will automatically be imported to Platform and appear in the Script index. You will need access to the Civis VPN and a Tableau Server account please see Publishing Reports in Tableau for more information on how to get started.
HTML
To get started use one of the available templates or choose Custom HTML for a blank report.
Upon creation a new HTML report will display the HTML used in the template or a blank HTML document.
Edit your HTML here or connect to an existing HTML document using the “Manage Versions” tab to connect to existing code in a repository. Click “Save” when you are done editing.
Services
Services allow you to deploy your code from an existing repository as an application on Civis Platform you can see Civis Service Deployment for more information to get started.
R Shiny Apps are a common framework deployed as Services and Civis maintains a custom Docker image from R Shiny deployments. See Shiny App Deployments for an example or refer to Civis Services Deployments.
For more advanced configurations of Civis Services please see Advanced Services.
SQL
SQL Reports enable you to create reports based on queries of your data in Platform. Please see Creating Reports with SQL for more information.
Sharing and Organizing Reports
You can share any report with other users and groups in your organization, without sharing additional resources. For example, you can share a Tableau report without providing access to the data behind the report. Similarly, you can share a Service report without providing access to the Service. For a more detailed description of sharing, see Sharing.
You can also add any report to a Project. For more information about projects, see Introduction to Projects.
Fullscreen
All reports can be viewed "full-screen" to see more of the report. By default, any reports you open from the main Reports page will be full screened. You can send fullscreen report links by adding "?fullscreen=true" to the end of the URL if it is not there already.
Troubleshooting
Refreshing Tableau Reports
Tableau Reports occasionally expire after being left open. In these cases, a browser refresh should fix the issue.
